Baseball: Ohio Defeats Akron to Complete Series Sweep
< < Back to baseball-ohio-defeats-akron-complete-series-sweepOhio completed a weekend series sweep of the Akron Zips on Sunday with a 3-2 victory in Akron. With the win, Ohio improved its record to 26-25 on the season.
Ohio had a 3-2 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth. Seth Streich, who got the complete game victory for Ohio, had a shaky start to the final inning.
Streich hit Akron’s Matt Rembielak in the ninth, giving him a free base. Rembielak was then advanced to second base on a wild pitch by Streich.
Ohio seemed to be in trouble, but Coach Carbone kept Streich in the game. Carbone’s decision turned out to be a good one as Streich was able to keep his cool and get the Bobcats out of the jam and end the game.
The game was tied 2-2 in the eighth inning until Ethan Newton batted in Ian Mezlak for what would turn out to be the game winning hit for the Bobcats.
Ohio got two runs in the second inning as Doug Holmes batted in Dan Schmidt and Cody Gaertner.
Akron got its runs in the fourth and sixth innings. Jared Turocy flew out to right field, scoring Brady Stewart on a sacrifice fly in the fourth.
Rembielak scored in the sixth off of an error by Streich. The two runs would be the only ones scored for Akron in the game.
Ohio had nine hits in the game, recording one more than the Zips’ eight. Streich recorded six strikeouts for Ohio as well.
Ohio’s next game is on Tuesday at Bob Wren Stadium. The Bobcats will take on the Dayton Flyers in a single game before Miami comes to Athens for a weekend series on Friday.
