Ohio School Report Cards Released

The State Superintendent of Ohio's Schools says everyone should be proud of the hard work students, educators and parents have done to improve test scores, but higher expectations are coming in the future.
The Ohio Department of Education released the 2010-2011 school report cards today.
The number of districts ranked "Excellent with Distinction" or "Excellent" increased by 56 to 352. The statewide average for all students' test scores jumped 1.7 points to 95. That's the biggest gain since 2004-2005.
Overall, students met the state goal on 17 out of 26 indicators. That's one less than last year.
State Superintendent Stan Heffner said, "We want to build on the strong academic progress we are making as we move to a more rigorous set of standards that will better prepare Ohio graduates to be college or career ready."
The report card this year has two graduation rate measures. The new measure tracks when students transfer to or from a school. It will replace the previous measure that estimated graduation rates.
The new method is required by federal law.
The new graduation measure shows a 78 percent graduation rate statewide. The old formula showed 84.3 percent.
