Ohio Drops Season Opener to Pepperdine
< < Back to ohio-drops-season-opener-pepperdineOhio volleyball fell in it's season opener to No. 11 Pepperdine in game one of the Flyer Classic in Dayton. The Waves won in straight sets, 25-16, 25-18, and 25-14.
"I thought it was similar to our practices," head coach Ryan Theis said. "We lack a little bit in consistency but we have some shades of really good play, but it can be tough to side out against a really good team like that."
Sophomore Kelly Lamberti had 11 kills and was two digs away from earning a double-double. Freshmen Abby Gilleland led Ohio with 16 assistants and senior Leah Petrovich finished the match with 11.
At moments throughout the game, Ohio had chances to pull ahead, but Pepperdine quickly came back to show why it is nationally ranked.
"We had moments," Theis said. "We were in it, competing at times and then we just couldn't convert. And that was probably just them stepping up. That's the kind of team they are."
Ohio takes on No. 7 Illinois Saturday and wraps up the weekend against Dayton. Coming up against top competition is a huge test, but also a good learning experience for the Bobcats.
Hopefully we are able to watch something in Pepperdine and their efficency," Theis said. "They just don't make any mistakes. They don't just let you earn it. They make it very tough to earn it."
