Coffee Shop Named As Newest Athens Safe Place Site
< < Back toTroubled teens in Athens have a new place to go for help.
Donkey Coffee and Espresso on Washington Street is the newest Sojourners Care Network Safe Place site.
Safe Place sites provide teens somewhere to go if they run away from home.
Shelly Horvath, Sojourners' director of communications, says Donkey is an ideal site.
"It's a place where young people hang out and it's easily known in the community and also they're open until twelve-thirty in the evening and the later hours are quite often when we get safe place calls," said Horvath.
According to Horvath, the employees at the Safe Places are trained to get a teen in contact with appropriate help when they arrive.
"By using this system of safe place sites around the region, we are able to provide these safe places that are easily recognizable where young people can go and get very specific help that they need," said Horvath.
Donkey joins Big Mama's Burritos, Good Will, and United Campus Ministries as Safe Places in the Athens area.
Sojourners has 35 Safe Place sites in Athens, Gallia, Hocking, Meigs, Ross and Vinton counties.
