Muskingum Valley Symphonic Winds Open 20th Season
< < Back to muskingum-valley-symphonic-winds-open-20th-seasonThe Muskingum Valley Symphonic Winds will open its 20th season with a performance titled "European Traditions" on Sunday, Nov. 4 at 7 p.m. in Brown Chapel on the campus of Muskingum University.
The concert's title reflects a celebration of the European tradition of wind band composition. The featured soloist is flutist Nicole Charles.
Under the direction of Dr. David A. Turrill, the concert opens with two works by celebrated English wind band composer Ralph Vaughan Williams, Toccata Marziale and Rhosymedre.
The Williams pieces will be followed by Suite Francais, by Darius Milhaud, in which each of the five-movements represents a different region of France.
The second half of the concert will feature Charles performing Flute Concerto in D by Georgian composer Otar Gordeli.
Four Scottish Dances, a work by Malcolm Arnold, will follow. Reflected in Arnold's piece are four dances, including a strathspey, a reel, a dance in the style of a Hebridean song and a fling.
The concert will conclude with a set of three European marches: March of the Belgian Paratroopers by Pierre Leemans; Florentiner March by Julius Fucik; and a Spanish march, Amparito Roca, by Jaime Texidor.
The Muskingum Valley Symphonic Winds are sponsored in part by the Ohio Arts Council.
Tickets are available at the door prior to the performance or by calling 740-826-8182. Tickets are $7 for adults, $5 for students and children under five are admitted free.
