Swimming and Diving: Ohio Back in Action at Zippy Invitational
< < Back toThe Ohio swimming and diving team travelled to Akron to participate in the Zippy Invitational for the first time since claiming the Patriot Invitational title two weekends ago.
Ohio’s 200-yard freestyle relay team claimed second place to start off the finals session on Friday night. Haley Clark, Lauren Funk, Katey Brooks and Addison Ferguson finished in a time of 1:34.17, falling to Buffalo by a little less than a half second. Michelle Gasior, Caroline Meyer, Tori Bagan and Anastasia Bocharnikova also grabbed tenth place for the Bobcats in the event.
Laurin Williams followed the relay team with a second place finish of her own in the 500 yard freestyle. Her time of 4:59.63 was good for 28 points. After the first two events, Ohio sat in fourth place.
Bocharnikova took ninth place in the 200-yard individual medley and Rachel Stearns took 15th place. Stephanie Gyurke rounded out the scoring in the event by claiming 21st place. Funk and Brooks, members of the 200-yard freestyle relay team, both notched top ten finishes in the 50-yard freestyle. Funk took third place while Brooks claimed ninth place in the event.
In the last event of the night, the 400-yard medley relay, Ohio dominated taking two of the top four spots. The team of Clark, Bocharnikova, Ferguson and Brooks finished in first place in a time of 3:47.10, snagging 64 points for Ohio. Katie Power, Megan Davis, Deidre Geroni and Funk took fourth place. Ohio finished the day in second place, trailing Toledo by only eight points.
Day two of the Zippy Invitational starts tomorrow at 9 a.m. with the prelims, followed by the finals beginning at 6 p.m.
