Streets In Cash Strapped Town Could Go Dark
< < Back to streets-cash-strapped-town-could-go-darkResidents of a cash-strapped eastern Ohio village say they want to keep their street lights on – even if it means another mandatory fee.
Mingo Junction officials are talking about shutting off street lights to save $60,000 to $70,000 a year in the Ohio River village of about 3,500. Residents who showed up at a meeting Tuesday night say they support paying a $4 monthly fee per household to keep the lights on.
Shutting off street lights is one of the options being discussed by the council. They'll make the final decision after getting a recommendation from a committee studying the issue.
Other options include having residents pay a higher fee to keep selected street lights burning near their homes.
Cost-cutting could also include layoffs.
