West Liberty University is joining a national trend at the start of the new year: On Jan. 1, it becomes a tobacco-free campus.

Signs informing students, staff and visitors of the new policy were posted over the last few weeks of the fall semester to inform people of the change.

Vice President of Human Resources James Stultz said the school has been offering smoking-cessation classes and information.

He said reaction has been generally positive because many students and employees are health-conscious and want to be in a healthy environment.

The policy prohibits the use of tobacco products on all grounds and parking areas, including traditional cigarettes, e-cigarettes, chewing tobacco, pipes, cigars, hookah or waterpipes and snus.

It's effective both indoors and out.
