Armed School Resource Officer To Be Discussed

Police and school officials will be discussing the possible hiring of an armed school resource officer with members of the Nelsonville City Council’s finance committee during a meeting Tuesday evening.
Committee members will be gathering information on a draft contract that calls for sharing the cost of the officer between the city and the Nelsonville-York City School District.
According to superintendent Mick McClelland the district and the police department have had informal discussions about hiring a resource officer for the past few years but the district never had the financial resources to do so.
In the aftermath of the school shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary, McClelland said Chief Jason Wallace presented him with a sample contract for an officer to be stationed at the school.
The final cost for hiring such an officer, the duties of the officer and how the district and city will split the cost of employment has yet to be determined.
If Nelsonville-York is able to hire the officer it would be the first school district in Athens County to do so.
The meeting is scheduled to begin at 6:30.
