N-Y Ends Regular Season With Strong Showing
< < Back toThe Nelsonville-York Buckeyes traveled to Vinton County take on the Vikings and defeated them in a rigorous battle, 64-60.
N-Y was able to put up 37 points in the second half by attacking the boards and getting second shots. They also limited the Vikings defensively by only allowing 11 points in the whole third quarter.
Senior Marc Carter led N-Y with 27 points, 19 of which were in the first half. Sophomore Emmitt Reed chipped in with 14 points and three rebounds.
Junior Alex Owings led Vinton County with 18 points and three rebounds. Senior L.B. Remy helped out the Vikings with 12 points and shooting 88 percent from the free throw line.
The Buckeyes were unable to get their composure together, starting off down 11-2 halfway through the first quarter. Carter stepped up to close the gap before halftime.
A new type of energy flowed through the Buckeyes after halftime, where they put up 15 points and took advantage of the seven turnovers the Vikings committed during the third quarter.
Vinton County could not get the ball into the post and were unable to hit outside shots, barely shooting 30 percent from the field. N-Y was able to use their physical defense to prevent those inside shots that the Vikings thrived off of in the first half.
The Buckeyes ended their season with a victory and a 16-6 record. With them being the No. 1 seed in the upcoming playoffs and only needing one win to reach the district tournament at The Convo.
The Buckeyes will take on the winner of the Crooksville-Alexander game on Feb. 22 at 6 p.m. at Athens High School.
