Ohio Baseball Earns First Win Of 2013

The Ohio baseball team notched its first win of the 2013 season and coach Rob Smiths’ career Saturday, beating Boston College, 8-1.
The game was an offensive showcase for the Bobcats (1-4), with every player recording a hit. Ohio’s 2, 3, 4 and 5 hitters in the lineup combined to go 8-for-20 with six RBIs and four runs scored.
Ohio took control with a four-run third inning and chased the Eagles’ starting pitcher John Gorman to giving up five runs and eight hits over three innings.
First Garrett Black drilled a two-RBI single, and three batters later Cody Gaertner came up with a two-RBI single of his own.
Ohio started the game off fast by scoring a run in the top of the first inning, on an RBI-single by Tyler Wells, which scored Garrett Black.
Jake Madsen and Brice Nikithser both blasted their first home runs of the season — Madsen in the fifth inning, and Nikithser in the eighth.
Boston College did not get on the board until the eighth inning, on a solo homerun by freshman catcher Stephen Sauter.
The winning pitcher was freshman starting pitcher Jake Miller, who went eight strong innings and recording seven strikeouts, while giving up a mere three hits and one earned run.
Sophomore pitcher Logan Cozart finished the game out for Ohio in the ninth, only allowing one hit and striking out one.
Ohio plays on Friday against Virginia Tech in the Irish Baseball Classic in Cary, N.C.
