Wirt County Operating Levy Passes In Special Election
< < Back to ?p=9748Wirt County has avoided emergency cuts that would have slashed its budget by 20 percent to 25 percent.
Media outlets report that the county's operating levy won enough votes in a special election to pass.
The levy had failed in two previous elections because it didn't receive the 60 percent majority vote required for passage.
In Saturday's special election, more than 71 percent of voters casting ballots approved the levy.
Wirt County is the only county in the state that has an operating levy.
The levy generates about $225,000 for the county, which has only 5,717 residents. Most of the revenue is used for employee salaries.
