Athena Cinema announces the return of the much-loved “Beat the Heat $2 Days” summer movie series from June 23 to August 5. The fifth annual Beat the Heat $2 Days series begins Friday, June 23rd and offers discounted admission to classic family films.
There are also several special events planned in conjunction with the series. The July 19 screening will feature, “The Secret In Your Garden,” a short presentation on bees and butterflies by Teresa Caldwell of the Athens Soil & Water Conservation District. The double feature finale event on August 5 will feature a live performance by OU Music professors Roger Braun and André Gribou.
“We chose films that we thought every child should experience on the big screen,” said the Athena Cinema’s Director, Alexandra Kamody.
The Athena Cinema of Ohio University’s College of Fine Arts is partnering with the Department of Real Estate Management, Community Engagement and Economic Development and several area agencies and businesses to bring back the family movie series. As part of the screening events, there are raffles, giveaways and other activities. The series benefits several area children’s agencies and all ticket proceeds benefit Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Athens County.
To benefit Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Athens County, the price of admission to these screenings will be a minimum suggested donation of $2 per ticket.
Tickets will be available one week before each scheduled screening. The screenings are one-time only events and there will be a limited number of tickets available. The Athena Cinema lobby is open Monday-Friday from 4 p.m.–10 p.m. and on Saturdays and Sundays 2:30 p.m.–10 p.m.
This series would not be possible without the generous support of our partners: Ohio University, Athens Area Chamber of Commerce, Athens County Children Services and Kids on Campus, Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Athens County, Shagbark Seed & Mill and Athens Public Libraries.
