The Actors Guild of Parkersburg is pleased to announce auditions for MISERY, a play by William Goldman and based on the Stephen King novel of the same name (1987). Auditions will be held on July 7 at 7 p.m. and July 8 at 7 p.m. Those interested in auditioning are asked to enter the black door on Market Street and go upstairs to the Rehearsal Hall.

MISERY follows successful romance novelist Paul Sheldon, who is rescued from a car crash by his “number one fan,” Annie Wilkes, and wakes up captive in her secluded home. While Paul is convalescing, Annie reads his latest book and becomes enraged when she discovers the author has killed off her favorite character, Misery Chastain. Annie forces Paul to write a new Misery novel, and he quickly realizes Annie has no intention of letting him go anywhere. The irate Annie has Paul writing as if his life depends on it, and it does.

This production has only three roles: Paul Sheldon, Annie Wilkes, and Sheriff Buster:

  • Paul Sheldon is a middle-aged author and can be arrogant, self-centered and During his time as Annie’s prisoner, Paul swings between utter terror, hopelessness, and depression and inspiration, hope, and bravery.
  • Annie Wilkes is a middle-aged former nurse living on a remote farm in She considers herself a proper woman who dislikes cussing and dresses conservatively. She first seems as a caring, nurturing, albeit a bit eccentric, nurse to Sheldon. However, she claims she is Sheldon’s “number one fan” and soon turns manic when she discovers Sheldon has killed off her favorite character.
  • Sheriff Buster is a middle-aged man and sheriff of Silver County, He has been searching for Sheldon, who he believes survived his serious auto accident as no body was found.
