Guest Speaker: Danny Lee Back

Since 1990 Danny Lee Black has been doing presentations on the history of inland river transportation and the History of the Steamboat. As President of the Cape River Heritage Museum, Cape Girardeau, Mo. He developed “History of Steamboats on the Western Waters” to take river history into the community. In 1990-91 he began giving this presentation as a fundraiser for the Library in conjunction with the Delta Queen boats visiting Cape Girardeau. It was always well received. When he moved to Indiana he began doing programs as a fund raiser for the Switzerland County Historical Society. He has given presentations to many Civic, Historical and Educational organizations throughout the tri-state. He has other programs about the rivers and the towns along them.

He has presented programs aboard the River Explorer, American Queen, Mississippi Queen and was a guest lecturer aboard the Delta Queen during her Heartland of America trip. He was a step-on lecturer aboard the Delta Queen and American Queen during their final year of operation.

Guest speaker for the Cincinnati Museum Center to Celebrate the opening of Tall Stacks 2003.

Tour Guide for the W. P. Snyder at Tall Stacks in 1999 and The 100th anniversary of the Belle of Louisville.

2011 was the 200th anniversary of the first steamboat on the inland rivers. Steamboats on The Western Waters gives the audience an overview of the rise and fall of the steamboat, first steamboat on the inland rivers, opening of the rivers for regular service, and types of steamboats. The program focuses on the Ohio and Mississippi rivers and their tributaries as during the height of the steamboat era they were considered the western waters. He usually adds a section on local steamboats and rivers.

The Power Point presentations feature many rare and unique scenes. The program takes approximately 1 hour, which includes 45 minutes for the program and 15 minutes for questions.

This program is free thanks to the generous support of the Washington County Public Library.
