Lyceum Luncheon Speaker Series – Total Eclipse of the Sun
February 15 @ 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm
The Southeast Ohio History Center Lyceum Speaker Series presents the program Not Since Tecumseh: Darkness at Midday in the Ohio Country – Total Eclipse of the Sun – April 8, 2024. The program is scheduled for Thursday, February 15 at noon.
Speaker, Tom O’Grady, from the Southeast Ohio History Center and the Ohio University Department of Physics and Astronomy, will present information about solar eclipses and their role in human history. He will include information about the last total eclipse of the Sun in Ohio on June 16, 1806. Known as Tecumseh’s Eclipse, that eclipse was part of an episode in the struggle between Native Americans and European settlers and the ongoing saga of broken treaties and the conversion of land from native hunting grounds and primeval forests to land broken beneath the plow.
The next total eclipse of the Sun in Ohio will not be until September 14, 2099. Visitors will be coming to Ohio in April 2024 from every continent on Earth to witness this dramatic and uncommon celestial phenomenon.
The Southeast Ohio History Center is located at 24 West State Street and offers limited parking in the rear off of North Congress Street. The Lyceum Luncheon Speaker Series is schedule for the third Thursdays of the month.
