The Rio Grande RedStorm (4-7) baseball team will travel to in-state rival Shawnee State Bears (7-7) for a 3-game weekend series. The series begins Friday when the two teams face off at 2 p.m. followed by a Saturday doubleheader beginning at noon.

The series marks the beginning of conference play for both teams.

Rio Grande won last year’s season series 2-1, including a 3-0 victory in the Mid-South Conference Tournament.

The RedStorm are currently riding a 2-game win streak. Their last victory came on Tuesday when they defeated NCAA Division II’s Gannon University 5-4.

Daniel Katayama, a Brazilian third baseman, leads the Bears with a .419 batting average and nine runs scored.

Mike Deitsch (2-1) will toe the rubber for Rio Grande in game one on Friday. The senior right-hander is leading the RedStorm with 18 strikeouts this season.

All three games will be played at Shawnee State’s Branch Rickey Park.
