OU Art Gallery Exhibits Chicago Painters
< < Back toThe Ohio University School of Art + Design has announced the next exhibition at the Ohio University Art Gallery: Chicago Paints, on view through Feb. 20.
The artists invited to participate in this exhibition were selected by Ohio University Professor John Sabraw, who teaches painting and drawing in the School of Art + Design.
Critical to modern and contemporary art, the movements and ideas that characterize the innovation of Chicago painters continues with a new generation of influential artists. Chicago Paints is an exhibition featuring fresh paintings straight from the studios of selected artists representing the energetic and pluralistic aesthetic that characterizes this vibrant cultural center.
The list of participating artists includes: Louise LeBourgeois, Steve Carrelli, Chris Cosnowski, Bill Conger, Bernard Williams, Frank Trankina, Elsa Munoz, Riva Lerher, Tim Lowly, Brian Ritchard, Vesna Jovanovic, Kyle Surges, Darrell Roberts, Vidvuds Sviedris, Michael Hedges, Melody Saraniti, Geoff Smalley, Amanda Williams, Amanda Joseph, Chris Kahler and John Sabraw.
Visiting speaker Amanda Williams
For the better part of 20 years, Amanda Williams has been consumed with how combining art and architecture might help make all parts of the city thrive. Williams graduated from Cornell University’s school of Architecture and practiced in the Bay Area for a number of years.
Deeply invested in understanding the relationship of color, race and space, Amanda uses vivid, culturally derived colors to paint foreclosed and abandoned houses on Chicago’s south side as a way to mark the pervasiveness of neglected and undervalued Black city space. Her work has garnered several accolades and opportunities for meaningful partnerships and collaborations.
She is a participant in the inaugural Chicago Architecture Biennial, a 3Arts Foundation awardee, and recipient of a Joyce Foundation scholarship. She is a former Eidlitz Travel Fellow to Ethiopia and was a featured artist in Chicago Artist Month.
Williams has exhibited and lectured throughout the US, including the Studio Museum in Harlem, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Syracuse University and the University of Michigan. Amanda is a member of the Board of the Hyde Park Art Center and has served as an advisor for the MCA Chicago, the Field Museum and the Chicago Park District. Williams is an Adjunct Professor at the Illinois Institute of Technology where she recently received an excellence in teaching award.
The exhibition can be viewed in the Ohio University Art Gallery in Seigfred Hall 536 through Feb. 20, with open gallery hours from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday-Friday, and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday.
