Women have played a significant role in rock music history, according to Madeleine Toerne, a Margaret Boyd Scholar at Ohio University.

"When I imagine rock-n-roll without the influence of women, it is an empty, monotonous past," she said. "Women have a voice, and a darn good one at that."
