The financially struggling Sistersville Ferry has averted a shutdown, thanks to a last-minute infusion of money from the state.

Sistersville City Council voted last week to immediately stop the ferry service, which had a deficit of more than $15,000. City and ferry board officials received notification Friday evening that the state would provide $25,000 to keep the ferry running.

Acting Senate President Jeff Kessler says that the Governor's Office will provide the money through a Local Economic Development Grant.

The ferry shuttles passengers across the Ohio River between Sistersville and Fly, Ohio. The ferry service began in 1815.

Sistersville Mayor Dave Fox says Tyler County is the only Ohio River county in West Virginia that doesn't have a bridge to Ohio.
