Bullying Bill Passes Senate Committee
< < Back to bullying-bill-passes-senate-committeeAn Ohio House bill that would expand policies against bullying in schools and online has cleared a Senate committee.
The Senate Education Committee on Tuesday approved House Bill 116 known as the Jessica Logan Act.
The proposed legislation is named for a Cincinnati teenager who hanged herself in 2008 after weeks of bullying at her school.
State Sen. Joe Schiavoni says the bill includes several concepts from a similar bill he has proposed to address bullying.
Schiavoni says provisions include allowing anonymous reporting and prohibiting students from making false reports.
The bill also requires parents be notified of school bullying policies.
Schiavoni says the bill could potentially save lives.
He says social media sites and cell-phone texting have made it easier for students to bully others.
