Athens Police Warn Of Scams
< < Back to athens-police-warn-scamsAthens City Police officials are trying to warn residents about a scam being run in the area.
They say individuals are calling residents attempting to solicit money from them.
Investigative Lieutenant John Withers says there are people making phone calls to residents asking for personal information.
These phone calls can be harassing and are part of the scam for residents to send money to the caller.
The person making these soliciting calls identifies himself as James Peters.
Peters attempts to solicit money from residents or obtain personal information so he can access financial accounts.
Police say people are also being contacted and told they have won a prize through Publisher's Clearing House.
They're told they need to pay taxes on the prize if they want to receive it.
Withers says if you have been the victim of such a phone scam, contact your local law enforcement agency and report the incident.
