Dr. Bernhard Debatin
< < Back toBernhard Debatin is professor at Ohio University’s School of Journalism and director of the journalism honors tutorial program. He teaches multimedia/online journalism, media ethics, science and environmental journalism, media theory, and media and diversity. His research interests include media ethics, Internet and social media, privacy issues, public sphere, semiotics, and metaphor theory.
Before coming to Ohio University in 2000, he was an associate professor at Leipzig University (1996‑2000) and a visiting professor at Berlin’s University of Fine Arts (1994‑1996). From 1989‑1993, he worked as a full-time DFG research fellow at the Technical University Berlin and served as adjunct lecturer. He was chairman of the German Media Ethics Association (2001‑2005) and has been a permanent member of and column writer for the Media Ethics Council (Ethikrat) of the Hamburg-based Akademie für Publizistik since 2003. He has also been a freelance writer for a variety of German media.
He received his PhD in Philosophy from the Technical University Berlin (1994) and his Master’s in Mass Communication from the Free University Berlin (1988). He authored Die Rationalität der Metapher (1995), several extended research reports, and has written over 70 articles for scholarly books and journals. He is editor of a book on the Mohammed Cartoon Debate (2007) and co-editor of books on media ethics (2003), online communication (2001), metaphor and rational discourse (1997), the telephone in movies (1991), and the public sphere (1989).
