Nelsonville's Stuart’s Opera House will host renowned singer-songwriter John Gorka on March 2 at 8 p.m.

Often lauded as a cornerstone of the “New Folk” movement, Gorka’s career has spanned 11 albums.

"John Gorka is someone who has been carrying that torch of traditional folk music for over 25 years," said Stuart's Opera House Marketing and Promotions Coordinator Brian Koscho.

Known for his versatile voice and powerful songwriting, Gorka’s long history gives weight to his work, even against the rising popularity of "indie-folk". Bon Iver may have won a couple of Grammys this year, but artists like Gorka have been working in the folk genre for decades.

"That's an important thing, in the grand scheme of folk music," said Koscho. "And as far as the resurgence of 'indie-folk' in the past few years goes, Gorka and a lot of these other musicians have been putting out albums independently since the 1970s. I think that's important to remember–that independently released and supported folk music has been around for awhile."

With nearly a dozen albums' worth of material to choose from, the song choices for the Nelsonville show are hard to predict. However, Koscho does predict a great show, citing the unique setting of the Opera House for eliciting terrific performances from visiting artists.

"I love seeing any good singer-songwriter who's been at it awhile at Stuart's; it's a perfect sound for the room," he said.
