About 1,400 people have registered for federal assistance following storms the past two months in Lincoln, Logan, Mingo, Marion and Wayne counties.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has approved about $2.6 million in funding to assist residents who suffered losses during storms in February and March.

Five disaster recovery centers are staffed by FEMA workers who help residents with storm-related assistance. The Small Business Administration is also offering low-interest disaster loans to homeowners, renters, private non-profits and businesses.

Heavy rain and tornadoes raked Lincoln, Marion and Wayne counties from Feb. 29 through March 5. Then on March 15 storms caused flooding, mudslides and landslides in Logan, Lincoln and Mingo counties.
