Joint Committee Explores Safety Of OU Homecoming Parade Route
< < Back to safety-ou-homecoming-parade-routeA joint committee of Athens city and Ohio University leaders is meeting Friday to discuss how to make the university’s annual Homecoming parade safer.
Athens Assistant Service-Safety Director Ron Lucas says the ad hoc committee will meet in the afternoon and their main focus will be on the parade route and crowd control.
Lucas is one of 11 members on the committee.
Lucas says the main concern of the route is between Washington and State Streets near a number of bars.
Lucas says he thinks it’s difficult to have the parade in that area with so many people on the sidewalks, but he will attend the meeting with an open mind.
Other members of the committee include representatives from the Athens and OU Police departments, a Student Senate member, and a past parade coordinator.
According to Lucas though, the committee doesn’t want discourage alumni from visiting as it is an important time for the community and local business.
