The city of Athens is offering a 1 time opportunity for backed taxpayers to catch up without a penalty.

Prior to signing a new contract with the Central Collection Agency, Athens is offering late taxpayers a chance to come clean through a tax amnesty program.

City tax administrator Tina Timberman says no penalty will be assessed to those who take advantage of the program.

"What we wanted to do was offer an amnesty program which is an opportunity to file delinquent tax return or delinquent employer withholdings with no penalty and

half interest charges."

The program will give taxpayers a chance to catch-up before the city joins the collection agency.

Timberman says the idea came from a similar program done in Dayton in 2008.

"For every person that comes forward, it's money we hadn't previously collected. So it's going to be increased revenue as well that becomes a future taxpayer, in

addition. So not only do we get the previous seven years backed taxes, but we also get taxes going forward."

The city is accepting tax return for the program through June 29th.
