Two West Virginia men have been hospitalized after the small, twin-engine airplane they were in crashed in a northeast Ohio field.

The Holmes County sheriff's office says the 1957 Piper Apache reported engine trouble before it crashed Thursday nearly 30 miles southwest of Canton.

The pilot, 60-year-old Floyd S. Pierson of Milton, W.Va., was in serious condition early Friday at Akron General Hospital. His passenger, 51-year-old Charles W. Stevens of Charleston, W.Va., was in serious condition in intensive care.

Pierson told deputies he'd been hired to fly the plane from Akron-Canton Airport to its new owner in Charleston, W.Va. He said he had to shut down one engine and the other had problems, so he had to crash-land.

Local and federal officials are investigating what caused the engine failure.
