A southern Ohio support group whose lobbying efforts helped spur the state's anti-painkiller addiction law planned to celebrate the opening of an expanded facility Friday.

Gov. John Kasich has cited the work of Scioto County-based SOLACE for bringing the problem of painkillers to his attention as he campaigned for governor in 2010.

The group consists of parents who lost adult children to painkiller overdoses.

It also includes recovering addicts and people with an addicted family member.

SOLACE's new office space in Portsmouth, a city hard hit by the painkiller epidemic, was supported with $58,000 in federal grants awarded by the state's drug and alcohol addiction services agency.

Overdose drug deaths have surpassed car crashes as the leading cause of accidental death in Ohio and several other states.
