Monroe County Mine Seeks EPA Permit

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency is reviewing plans for a mining project in Monroe County.
American Energy Corporation has filed an application for a permit to discharge treated runoff from a Beallsville mining site into Piney Creek.
The EPA has scheduled a public meeting on the application for August 14 in Beallsville.
American Energy wants to build a new refuse disposal area at the company's Century Mine.
The new disposal area would be located near an existing disposal site with two settling ponds.
The EPA says "Any approved discharge may result in a change from the current water quality conditions" of two small streams "but cannot violate Ohio's water quality standards."
The agency "will consider the technical, economic, social and environmental aspects of the project before deciding to issue or deny the permit"
