Ohio Men’s and Women’s Golf Update

Men’s Golf
The men’s golf team traveled to Muncie, Ind., last weekend to play the Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational at Delaware Country Club, a thre-day individual stroke play event comprised of just fewer than 50 golfers from surrounding Midwest universities.
Ohio players varied across the board, with freshman Mike Engelman faring the best with a tie for 26th (226) and senior Michael Lamping coming in just spots behind at a tie for 31st (228). Engelman shot a team-low 71 on the second day, priming him for low man on the team.
Lamping seemed to benefit from play this week as the team’s season concludes next week in Dayton.
“For me especially, this tournament helped me get out of a little rut,” said Lamping. “Coach and I worked a fair amount of this week to get my game back in shape in Dayton.”
Sophomores Thomas Leech, Andrew Mlynarski, and Will Stines neared the bottom of the leaderboard with respective three-day scores of 238, 246, and 255. Senior Byron Firestone shot a two-over 72 the first day of play, but withdrew from the tournament.
Weather conditions after the first day prevented players from completing the full two rounds scheduled due to darkness. Play was resumed the next day as the remainder of the second round and the start of the third round was played.
“The course was good and the greens were rolling nice,” said Lamping. “The weather was windy and cold at parts, but it was warm on Tuesday and was beautiful out.”
The Bobcats finish out their fall season as they head to Dayton next Monday and Tuesday to play in the Dayton Fall Invitational at NCR Country Club.
Women's Golf
The women’s golf team finished play at The Fall Preview at Longaberger Golf Club in Nashport, Ohio, on Tuesday. The team hosted the tournament and finished 11th out of 15 teams, competing against a field mostly comprised of MAC schools.
Freshman Angela Codian led the team with a two-round score of 159, improving by three strokes on the second day to card a 78 and finished in a tie for 20th. Julie Lechner finished in a tie for 17th, scoring a 158, with a 3-over 75 in the second round, but played as an individual in the event, disallowing her from affecting team play. This was the first event of the year that Codian did not place highest on the team during tournament play.
Kristen Helmsdoerfer and Kara Brinkmann finished a stroke apart at 163 and 164, respectfully. Sarah Tranelli finished at a tie for 57th with a 166 total and Lauren McKinzie placed with a tie for 75th with a 172. Lauren Volz also played as an individual for Ohio and placed in 78th.
The lady Bobcats failed to beat any conference teams, but did reign over Youngstown State, Chicago State, University of Dayton, and University of Detroit Mercy. Ohio’s 652 two-day total put them 31 strokes behind Ball State, who won the event by three strokes over Bowling Green State. Ball State’s Meghan Perry won the tournament with a two-day total of 150.
With only one tournament left on the fall schedule—Oct. 22 at the Dayton Fall Invitational—the Bobcats hope to gain some momentum heading into off-season tournaments and the start of the spring season.
