A Cabell County doctor has been sentenced to two years in federal prison for violating drug control laws.

Dr. Anita Dawson of Milton was sentenced Monday in federal court in Huntington.

The 55-year-old Dawson earlier pleaded guilty to writing prescriptions for addictive pain medications to a patient who had a known addiction. Dawson also admitted she wrote prescriptions for nearly 6,000 pills containing oxycodone and more than 220 pills of the painkiller Endocet.

U.S. District Judge Robert Chambers noted at the sentencing that nine of Dawson's patients had died of prescription drug overdoses. Also testifying Monday were family members of three people killed in a 2009 crash. The driver of the other vehicle was a patient of Dawson's and was under the influence of prescription medication at the time.
