A statewide program aimed at helping children maintain and improve their reading skills is seeking 500 workers for next summer.

The eight-week program offered in rural and low-income communities is administered by the West Virginia University Extension Service and AmeriCorps.

In return for 300 hours of service, AmeriCorps mentors and community coordinators receive a $1,850 summer living allowance and a $1,175 education award good for up to seven years to pay for college tuition or loans.

Applicants must be at least 18 years old before June 13.

Applications are available online or by calling (304) 293-3855. The selection process begins March 1. Applications will be accepted until all positions are filled.
