WV Environmental Regulators Investigating Wastewater Spill
< < Back to wv-environmental-regulators-investigating-wastewater-spillState regulators are investigating the spill of more than 2,200 barrels of brine wastewater at a drilling site in Marshall County.
Reports say an open valve allowed the wastewater to spill into a local tributary of Big Wheeling Creek last week.
West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) spokeswoman Kathy Cosco says the agency is examining water and soil samples to determine whether any remediation or follow-up monitoring might be necessary.
The pond is located on surface property owned by CONSOL Energy. Noble Energy is partnering with CONSOL to drill in the Marcellus Shale in Marshall County.
Noble Energy spokeswoman Stacey Brodak says the company will cooperate with the DEP. Noble Energy also is investigating to determine why the valve was open.
