Athens City Council voted Monday to continue efforts in educating area students on substance abuse prevention.

Council member Kent Butler sponsored ordinance 0-34-13, which allows authorities to begin the grant application process. The grant would fund Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) programming in Athens elementary and middle schools.

The program has been operating for over 20 years in Athens. Council member Butler says the program is often successful because it addresses the unique needs of Athens area students.

"Traditionally, this is a very impoverished part of the state," Butler says. "And there may not always be the resources within the home to communicate."

Council members expect to see the results of the grant application in the coming months.
