A state Department of Agriculture spokesman says a water buffalo and her calf were found abandoned in Jackson County could be headed to auction.

Spokesman Buddy Davidson said the water buffaloes would be sold to the highest bidder. He says no date has been set for the auction, which would have to be publicized in advance.

Residents reported seeing the water buffalo in the Evans area for several months. Agriculture officials believe the water buffalo came from a local game farm that closed last year.

The water buffaloes were caught last month and given a temporary home at the agriculture department's farm in Mason County.

Water buffalo are native to Southeast Asia.
