Smoking is no longer allowed in some outdoor areas and hotel and motel rooms in Marshall County.

Marshall County Board of Health members voted in February to expand the county's smoking ban. It went into effect Monday.

Smoking is banned in outdoor venues such as parks, ball fields, swimming pools, fairs and festivals. Smokers also can't light up within 15 feet of businesses' doorways and ventilation systems.

City and county officials can ask the health department for permission to designate smoking areas in outdoor venues.

County health department administrator Ronda Francis says that only one park has made a request so far.

Violators of the ban face up to $1,000 in fines.
