West Virginia has expanded the ranks of probation officers who deal exclusively with sex offenders.

Media outlets report that Supreme Court Chief Justice Brent Benjamin swore in eight new officers on Wednesday.

Called intensive supervision officers, they provide more stringent oversight to those convicted of sexual offenses. They work out of their vehicles instead of offices and are available holidays, nights and weekends.

The newly sworn officers will work for the state Division of Probation Services' Intensive Supervision Unit.

Probation Services deputy director Caren Bills says more than 400 adult and juvenile sex offenders are under the unit's supervision.
