One Lane Of Westbound State Route 33 Open After Vehicle Fire

UPDATE 8:55 p.m. The Athens Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a Monday afternoon semi-tractor trailer fire that closed down U.S. 33 East of Nelsonville.

According to a release, Benjamin T. Davidson, 43, of Cornelius, North Carolina was driving westbound on U.S. 33 when the driver side rear tire blew out.  Investigators say the tire caught fire and engulfed the vehicle and trailer, which was loaded with canned beverages.

The release states that westbound lanes of U.S. 33 were closed for approximately one hour while the Dover/Chauncey Fire Department Extinguished the fire.

Athens County Sheriff Pat Kelly posted a video of the fire on his Facebook page.

No one was injured in the fire. 

The Ohio Environmental protection Agency was called to the scene to assist with the clean-up.


UPDATE 6:06 p.m. Crews have opened up one lane of westbound U.S. 33 after a semi-tractor trailer caught fire on Monday afternoon.

Athens County Sheriff Pat Kelly says the semi-tractor trailer caught fire near the Wayne National Forest headquarters.

He posted a video of the fire on his Facebook page.

Kelly said crews had both directions of Route 33 closed earlier over safety concerns in case fire caused an explosion.

No one was injured in the fire.
