A canine member of the Athens County Sherriff's office was put down this morning after a two month battle with serious health issues.

Turner, the canine partner of Athens Deputy Matt May, worked with the police force for over three years. He served as a narcotics intervention dog in the K-9 unit.

Athens County Sheriff Pat Kelly says the dog contributed quite a bit to their investigations.

"He spent many hours on the highways for me, and he did an excellent job. He's recovered a lot of narcotics over the past couple years," Kelly said.

The dog was six years old.
