Ohio State, Northern Iowa Highlight Ohio’s Non-Conference Schedule

The Ohio men’s basketball team announced its schedule for the 2013-14 season on Tuesday. The Bobcats will have 17 of their 31 regular season games played at home, including their season opener against Northern Iowa.

Ohio officially announced the game at Ohio State, which will match the two teams up for the first time since 1994 when they played in the Preseason NIT.

The Bobcats play 18 conference games, which is the highest for the Mid-American Conference since 2005-06. Ohio will play each MAC East opponent twice along with Toledo and Western Michigan as well.

2013-14 Ohio Men’s Basketball Schedule Analysis:

Nov. 2 – Exhibition game vs. Ashland: The Eagles start their season against Ohio in the Convocation Center before entering their Division II schedule. They went 13-12 last season and averaged 67.8 points per game.

Nov. 9 – Home vs. Northern Iowa

Last year’s record: 21-15

Key player lost: Anthony James (Leading scorer and Second Team All-MVC selection)

Key player lost: Deshaun Thomas (Led the Big Ten in scoring with 19.8 ppg)

Key players returning: Aaron Craft (10.0 ppg, 4.6 apg, 2.1 spg), LaQuinton Ross (8.3 ppg)

Nov. 17 – Home vs. Valparaiso – Ohio Classic

Key player returning: Justin Black (Averaged 14.2 points and 4.2 rebounds a game)

Key player lost: Nate Davis (Averaged a double-double with 15.8 points and 11.1 rebounds a game)

Key player returning: Ishaam Smith Jr. (Third on the team with 8.8 ppg as a freshman)

Nov. 26 – Home vs. Mercer – Ohio Classic

Last year’s record: 24-12

Postseason Tournament: Lost to BYU in the second round of the 2013 NIT.

Key player lost: Travis Smith (Leading scorer with 13.9 ppg, played in all 36 games)

Key player returning: Langston Hall (Senior point guard averaged 11.3 points and 5.0 assists last year)

Nov. 30 – Home vs. Evansville – Ohio Classic

Last year’s record: 21-15

Postseason Tournament: Lost to East Carolina in the semifinals of the 2013 CIT.

Key player lost: Colt Ryan (Evansville’s all-time leading scorer with 2,279 career points)

Key player returning: Egidijus Mockevicius (6-foot-10 center who is the lone consistent starter returning from last year)

Dec. 7 – Away vs. Oakland

Last year’s record: 16-17

Postseason Tournament: Lost in the first round of the CIT to Youngstown State.

Key player lost: Drew Valentine (Fourth-leading scorer with 10.2 ppg last year)

Key player returning: Travis Bader (Averaged 22.1 points last year, which was fifth in the nation. Career average of 15.0 points per game against Ohio including a 20-point game last year.)

Dec. 14 – Home vs. Alabama A&M

Last year’s record: 11-20

Postseason Tournament: N/A

Key player lost: Justin Wagner (Only senior on last year’s team, averaged 8.9 minutes in 25 games played)

Key player returning: Demarquelle Tabb (Did it all for Alabama A&M with 14.0 ppg and 9.9 rpg.)

Dec. 18 – Home vs. UMass

Last year’s record: 21-12

Postseason Tournament: Lost to Stony Brook in the first round of the NIT.

Key player lost: Terrell Vinson (Second on the team in scoring with 12.3 ppg)

Key player returning: Chaz Williams (Led last year’s team with15.5 ppg, 7.3 apg and 2.0 spg.)

Dec. 22 – Away vs. Richmond

Last year’s record: 19-15

Postseason Tournament: Lost in the second round of the College Basketball Invitational to Wright State.

Key player lost: Darien Brothers (Led the team with 14.1 points and 2.5 three-pointers made per game)

Key player returning: Derrick Williams (The 6-foot-6, 270-pound senior forward 11.4 points and 5.4 rebounds per game last year.)

Dec. 30 – Home vs. Longwood

Last year’s record: 8-25

Postseason Tournament: N/A

Key player lost: Michael Kessens (Team’s leading rebounder last year with 8.8 per game)

Key player returning: Tristan Carey (Averaged 15.6 points and 5.1 rebounds a game)

Jan. 4 – Away vs. UNC-Asheville

Last year’s record: 16-16

Postseason Tournament: N/A

Key player lost: Jeremy Atkinson (Led the team in both points and rebounds last season)

Key player returning: Trent Meyer (Third on the team in points and dished out 3.9 assists per game last year)

The Bobcats open MAC play on the road against Kent State on Jan. 8. The two teams they play twice in the MAC West, Toledo and Western Michigan, finished in the top two of their division last year.
