Rio Grande claimed its second victory of the season as it defeated Union (Ky.) College 2-1 on Friday. Sophomore forward Kasey Crow scored the game-winner with eight minutes to go in regulation, lifting the RedStorm (2-1) to a solid home victory.

In the first half, Union (0-2) was first to strike, taking an early 1-0 lead in the first ten minutes of the match. After giving up a goal, the RedStorm defense locked down with an impressive performance by junior goalkeeper Allison Keeney.

Keeney played the role of the proverbial brick wall and captured six huge saves for the RedStorm.

Along with impressive defense by the RedStorm, sophomore Courtney Young struck the back of the net in the 23rd minute and scored unassisted, which tied the match 1-1 by halftime.

As the second half crawled forward both teams struggled to put the ball into the net early. In the last ten minutes of the game the RedStorm cashed in an opportunity as Crow scored a free kick, giving Rio all it needed.

“After a strict halftime talk, I thought we moved the ball around fantastic in the second half,” head coach Callum Morris said.

“The girls didn’t let a few bad breaks get through to them and that was key. They played very hard in the second half and hopefully they can take this momentum into tomorrow’s match.”

Overall, Rio outshot Union 16-12 in the match, while both teams took two corners each on the night.

Rio will face Davenport University Saturday at Evan E. Davis Field at 5 p.m.
