The City of Portsmouth has named a City Manager.

Portsmouth City Council President Steve Surgill says Derek Allen, the current Village Administrator in Delta, Ohio, has agreed in principle to accept the job.

Portsmouth City Council must still vote to officially hire Allen. That is expected to take place on September 23.

Allen will be Portsmouth’s first city manager since 1987.

Sturgill says the hiring announcement was made Thursday to allow Mr. Allen time to complete his contractual agreement with his current employer, and assist Delta, Ohio with their search for his replacement.

Allen is expected to begin his duties as City Manager in Portsmouth on January 1.

Allen was one three finalists for the job. He interviewed for the job with council members earlier this week.

He has been the Village Administrator in Delta since February 2008.
