The visiting Unioto Shermans trailed early but rallied to defeat Alexander by a score of 27-6.
Unioto lost to Vinton County and McClain in weeks 1 and 2 but juniors Nate Parker and Dillon Binegar powered the ground game Friday night, which played a key role in the Shermans first victory of the season.
Parker carried the ball 12 times for 126 yards and 1 touchdown, while Binegar added 15 carries for 65 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Sophomore quarterback Erique Hosley completed 5 out of 9 passes for 83 yards and 1 touchdown.
Alexander’s Josh Barnes scored the Spartans’ lone touchdown of the game with two minutes remaining in the first quarter. That touchdown was the last time Alexander saw the end zone.
The Spartans’ offense was nearly non-existent the rest of the game against a resilient Unioto defense, which held Alexander to 3 first downs and allowed a total of only 110 yards on the night.
Parker proved he could play on both sides of the ball, leading his team in tackles with five on the night. Austin Houser, Ryan Spencer and Brenden Bowles all added a sack to their defense’s stat sheet.
Alexander (1-2) hopes to bounce back next week when they travel to Waverly (1-2).
Nelsonville-York 44, Berne Union 21
The Nelsonville-York Buckeyes defeated a visiting Berne Union Rockets team, 44-21, in convincing fashion on Friday night.
The first half the game went back and forth, but Nelsonville-York held a slight lead over the Rockets by a score of 26-21 at half time.
A tough Buckeye defense contained the Rockets in the second half by not allowing them to score again.
Buckeyes running back Alex Mount dominated on the offensive side of the ball, pummeling through Berne Union’s defense. Mount carried the ball 26 times for 333 yards in addition to having the title of the leading scorer for the Buckeyes with three touchdowns.
Nelsonville-York (1-2) will host the River Valley Raiders (0-3) Friday, Sept. 20.
