A little-used area code in West Virginia is being dialed more frequently.

The 681 area code was introduced in March 2009. Until then, West Virginia's lone area code of 304 made the state one of the last in the U.S. to have a single area code.

Susan Small is director of communications for the West Virginia Public Service Commission. She says the most recent records available from the North American Numbering Plan show that 61,984 homes and businesses now use area code 681.

The 681 area code is an overlay for the entire state. That means existing customers within the 304 area code did not have to change their phone numbers. The 681 area code was available only to new subscribers all over the state.
