Ohio’s Civil Rights Commission Weighs Final Decision On Discrimination Case
< < Back to ohios-civil-rights-commission-weighs-final-decision-discrimination-caseOhio's civil rights commission is weighing a final decision in a five-year-old case in which a landlady discriminated against undercover fair housing testers.
A 2009 complaint by the Ohio Civil Rights Commission claims that Helen Grybosky told testers with disability dogs that pets weren't allowed or required an extra deposit.
A second complaint claims the Conneaut woman told a tester with a child that she could only rent a downstairs unit at a higher cost.
An administrative judge previously upheld the allegations. At issue at the commission's Thursday meeting are damages and attorneys' fees.
Fair Housing Resource Center in Painesville in northeastern Ohio first investigated Grybosky.
Grybosky's attorney has long argued no discrimination occurred because testers, not real renters, were involved.
