Cumberland Extends Rio’s Losing Streak To Six
< < Back to cumberland-extends-rios-losing-streak-sixThe Rio Grande RedStorm suffered a tough straight-sets loss to the Cumberland Bulldogs, 25-23, 30-28, 25-23. The RedStorm’s losing streak is now at six.
The story of the game was Rio Grande’s inability to finish the set. The RedStorm held a five-point, 17-12, late in the first set. The Bulldogs took 10 of the next 15 points to tie the game at 22 all. Cumberland went on a 3-1 run to take the set 25-23.
In the second set, the RedStorm had a 24-21 lead late. They failed to convert on three straight set points and the Bulldogs tied the game at 24-24. Rio Grande and Cumberland went back and forth until the Bulldogs were able to take points 29 and 30 to win the set, 30-28.
The RedStorm started the third set on an 8-1 run. However, they saw that lead disappear as the Bulldogs came back to tie the set at 13 all. A see-saw battle ensued as each team netted 10 points apiece, with neither side scoring consecutive points, tying the match at 23-23. But the Bulldogs would prove to be the better team taking the next two points to win the set and the match.
The RedStorm were led offensively by Autumn Snider, who had 11 kills, and Kayla Briley who added a game-high 36 assists. Chandler Brown led the defensive effort with 17 digs.
Now on a six-game losing streak, the RedStorm have lost five of the matches in straight sets and have won just one set in the last six games.
Rio Grande (1-8, 0-7) will look to rebound when it participates in the Cumberland (Tenn.) University Classic, a two-day event. On Friday, the RedStorm will take on Freed-Hardeman at 2 p.m. and Ohio Valley University at 6 p.m.
