RedStorm Extend Winning Streak To Four Games
< < Back to redstorm-extend-winning-streak-four-gamesThe Rio Grande RedStorm (5-9, 1-7) picked up their first Mid-South Conference victory while extending their winning streak to four with a victory in straight sets against the Pikesville Bears, 25-20, 25-10, 25-14.
The first set was tightly contested. The scored was deadlocked 18-18 late. The RedStorm persevered and took seven of the last nine points to take the first set.
Rio Grande dominated the second set of the night. It led 5-3 early on, and that was close as Pikesville got. The RedStorm gave up just seven points the rest of the frame while taking 20 of the next 27 points to win it. This was the RedStorm’s second best defensive set of the season with first coming against West Virginia Tech where they gave up just eight points in the first set.
The third set was a see-saw battle to the midpoint when the Bears and RedStorm were tied at 11 all. The RedStorm, however, ran away with it. They allowed just 3 points the rest of the frame while cruising to a 25-14 victory to take the set and the match to win their first conference game of the season.
Kayla Briley continued her run of leading in assists with 37 dishes in the match. Betsy Schramm led the RedStorm with 11 kills and Nicole Ogg added 13 digs on defense.
“The weekend is what helped us tonight,” head coach Billina Donaldson said. The RedStorm won three games over the weekend at the Cumberland University Classic after snapping a seven-game losing streak.
Donaldson said she feels that the team learning how to win and realizing that it can win will help tremendously moving forward.
The RedStorm will look to continue their newfound success as they travel to St. Catharine College on Oct. 1 for a 7 p.m. match.
