Pioneers Lose To Capital, Remain Winless in OAC
< < Back to pioneers-lose-capital-remain-winless-oacIt takes a team to win a game, but Hilary Ells, a former All-Ohio Athletic Conference Second Team member, carried the squad on her back with a four-goal effort Tuesday in Capital’s (11-4-1, 4-2) 5-0 rout of Marietta (2-13, 0-6.)
Ells scored in the 10th, 13th, 29th and 31st minutes and tacked on another on-target blast. With the heroic effort, she went from being tied for second in the OAC with eight goals, to the top spot in the conference with 12.
As if Ells’ performance wasn’t enough, Jackie Kelly made it a five-goal match in the 85th minute with a blast from outside of the box into the top-right corner.
Capital’s offense controlled the pace of the game from the opening whistle, outshooting the Pioneers 22-6 and earning 10 corner kicks to Marietta’s zero.
Marietta’s six shots were divided evenly between the two halves, with four of them requiring attention from Capital goalkeepers Kim Leitch and Maggie Donnelan.
With Tuesday’s blowout, the Pioneers have given up 24 goals in their past 6 matches. Marietta has had offensive opportunities in conference play with 48 total shots, but its Oct. 16 loss to Muskingum remains the only conference game in which the Pioneers were not shut out.
Marietta will travel to Wilmington (9-5-1, 3-2) this Saturday to take another crack at its first OAC win.
