Gilleland, Pinson Sweep MAC East Weeklies

The Ohio University volleyball team swept MAC East Player of the Week honors for the second time this season Monday.

Sophomore setter Abby Gilleland earned MAC East Offensive Player of the Week honors as graduate middle blocker Alexis Pinson claimed the MAC East Defensive Player of the Week award.

Monday marked the second time this season that Gilleland has captured the offensive award while Pinson won Defensive Player of the Week for a MAC-leading fourth time.

Gilleland led the Bobcats offensively this past weekend notching 10.6 assists/set and 1.8 kills/set on a .469 clip during the team’s first road sweep of the Northern Illiniois-Western Michigan trip since 2007.

The sophomore recorded a match-high 39 assists along with seven kills and eight digs in Friday’s matchup against Northern Illinois. On Saturday, the Bull Valley, Ill., native notched personal bests in assists (56) and digs (22) in one of the best performances of her career.

Pinson also played a significant role in the Green & White’s successful weekend. The graduate student knocked down 1.44 blocks/set and notched 2.8 points and 1.9 kill/set, all while hitting .325 overall.

The Phoenix, Ariz., native led Ohio in blocks Friday during the team’s 3-1 win over Northern Illinois. Pinson went on to record five total blocks and 13 kills Saturday as the ‘Cats defeated WMU 3-2.

Ohio will return to action against Akron on Friday at 7 p.m.
